The Owen Sound Sports Hall of Fame will have 11 new members this year.
The Hall of Fame committee has announced the selection of six new athletes, three builders and two others who will receive special merit awards.
The athletes are:
Ava Jacqueline (Jackie) Terry, ( nee Simpson ), a champion riflewoman who has won numerous awards in her career, including a gold at the Pan-Am Games in 1979. She also competed in the Olympics in Los Angeles in 1984.
Bob Hamley, a lacrosse player and coach. As a player, Hamley won six Canadian championships and two more as a pro, scoring 750 goals and nearly 1,800 points. He is also a longtime National Lacrosse League coach and manager, winning the league’s awards as top coach and GM in 2005.
John Campbell, also a lacrosse player and coach. He was a member of the Owen Sound North Stars when they won the Presidents Cup as Canadian Senior B champions in 1979 and 1980.
Jerry Bouma a runner. The West Hill Secondary School graduate still holds district track records dating back to 1970.
Deborah Killing, a Canadian majorettes champion.
Robert “Casey” Gray, a hockey player. He was a goalie at the University of Michigan in the early 1960s before embarking on a minor pro career.
The builders are:
Clarence “Flea” Christie, for many years the director of parks and recreation in Owen Sound.
Earl Georgas, a longtime city businessman active in a number of sports, notably skiing and basketball.
Howie Traynor, active for many years in minor and junior hockey and men’s softball.
Special merit honourees:
Bill Dane, a journalist whose career began as a sports writer and broadcaster in Owen Sound.
Harold Sutherland, whose sponsorships have kept many sports teams afloat over the years.
This year’s induction ceremony will take place on Friday, May 11 at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre. Tickets are available from Sports Hall of Fame committee members.
