We approach the end of 2011 and as we look back we discover great stories in local sports that stood out this year and maybe at length
Perspective is everything and it’s difficult to gauge which of the following was the best of the bunch I’ve selected for today
Would it be the fastball accomplishments in Wiarton ?
The Midget Red Devils won the Ontario Qualifier and then won the National Championship in New Brunswick.
Not to be outdone, the Men’s team in Wiarton, the Nationals, won the Ontario Cup and as a result have qualified for the 2012 ISC II event.
From a hosting standpoint, the Canadian Men’s Fastball Championship in Owen Sound was a terrific event and we look forward to the return of the National Junior Championship this August
Fastball aside, golfers Brianna Cooper and Taylor Schmidt of Kincardine would garner consideration.
Cooper won the Ontario Women’s match Play title while Schmidt was second at the Ontario Women’s Amateur.
I think you also have make an argument for Alex Morrow of Saugeen District who broke a Bluewater track record established nearly 30 years by Donald Duprey.
And would the skiing comeback of Larisa Yurkiw or the drafting of Adam Jones in Pro Lacrosse not also be considered as highlights in certain circles ?
I think so, and I’m sure I missed a bunch too.
Tomorrow, what I consider to be the local sporting highlight of 2011
I’m Fred Wallace
