Quebecor Incorporated is laying off 400 people at its Sun Media chain of newspapers and other properties.
The Southern Ontario Newsmedia Guild confirms 400 jobs are on the block at Sun Media and other Quebecor properties.
Half the jobs will be cut through buyouts, while 200 other people will be let go through layoffs or attrition.
Quebecor owns dozens of newspapers thru its’ subsidiaries Osprey media and Sun Media.
Included in the holdings of the company is the Owen Sound Sun Times.
No word on whether anyone at the local paper is affected.
Along with being the largest newspaper publisher in Canada, Quebecor launched the SunNews 24-hour news channel last year.
The Sun chain’s last big round of layoffs came just before Christmas in 2008 with 600 jobs cut.
Quebecor is reporting a 69 per cent drop in profits.
