There is no football game today at Saugeen District Secondary School in Port Elgin, which is too bad.
The Bluewater Champion Royals were eliminated in the CWOSSA semifinal match on a chilly Friday afternoon at home, 43-12 by the John F. Ross Royals of Guelph.
Make no mistake, the Guelph Royals were full marks for the victory.
An early east-west sweep by one of their runners kept Saugeen District’s D on notice, and eventually opened the door for the aptly named Charles Carrier to bash his way continually up the middle for 5 touchdowns in close..
J.F. Ross was not a one man show, but when it came to putting points on the board, Carrier put up 30.
For Saugeen District their greatest issue is likely geography.
SDSS continues to be the class of the Bluewater League, exemplified by a 50 point margin in this year’s championship.
But if you abide the theory, ” you are what you eat “, it’s noticeable that JF Ross and the southern CWOSSA teams have tougher competition to chew on, and that in turn makes them better, more game tested and gives them confidence even when Saugeen District put early points on the board.
So short of hiring a giant crane and transporting the Port Elgin Royals into Wellington or Waterloo-Oxford, the Saugeen District squad will have to content themselves with being the Bluewater Champions again and shift their attention to high school football in 2012.
