The family of a salt mine worker killed in a violent tornado that ripped through Goderich is raising questions about his death.
Brenda Turcotte Laberge says she wants to know why her 61 year old husband was the only one killed in the storm on Sunday.
Normand Laberge died on the job at the Sifto salt mine, but the company says other employees who were working at the time survived.
Turcotte Laberge says her husband was manning the boom — an extendable arm that loads freight onto ships — when the twister hit and pinned him under the rubble.
It’s the first time we have heard the circumstances surrounding Laberge’s death.
Turcotte Laberge says he always kept a close watch on the weather while working and had reported seeing a bad storm on the horizon.
A spokeswoman for Sifto’s parent company Compass Minerals says the mine was being evacuated — but Laberge wasn’t able to escape.
Kelly Barton says Laberge was up high because he oversees the loading of ships, and his position may have made him more vulnerable to the storm.
