It’s Tuesday and a rare day for lacrosse, yet one of the biggest games of the season goes tonight in St Catharines.
The Owen Sound Quantum Properties Woodsmen meet the Saints in Game 2 of the Ontario Senior Lacrosse Championship for the Clare Levack Trophy.
The Woodsmen lead the best of 7 championship 1 game to none by virtue of a 14-10 win Friday night in the opener at the Harry Lumley-Bayshore Community Centre.
I know, I know what you’re thinking, ‘ Tuesday ? ‘
Isn’t Senior Lacrosse, by nature designed to be a ” weekend ” league ?
Isn’t a six hour round trip plus prep and playing time an inordinate amount of time to expend on a traditional work day for the players ?
Wouldn’t you get a better crowd playing your home dates on a Friday through Sunday basis, as opposed to a Tuesday night ?
These are just a few of the questions that really have obscured the actual action on the floor, which was certainly back and forth in the opener in Owen Sound.
But such is the nature of amateur leagues and the people who are charged with operating the various teams, electing in this case, and in many others, to not do what’s best for the sport but rather do what’s most annoying and counter productive.
Game time tonight 8:30 at the Burgoyne Arena in St Catharines
Game 3 is back in Owen Sound Friday night
