Lucas Kim Prevails at Investors Group Ontario Junior Boys Championship
17-year-old Lucas Kim of Toronto earned his chance to hoist the historic Lady Eaton trophy on Friday, capturing the Investors Group Ontario Junior Boys title at Bay of Quinte Golf and Country Club.
The Team Ontario member, who scored an earlier victory this season at the CN Future Links Prairie Championship, closed out the 72-hole tournament at -11, earning a three stroke victory over the highly competitive field of Ontarios best junior golfers.
Kim started strong on Tuesday with a three-under par 69, before adding a second 69 on Wednesday to move to a tie at the top of the leaderboard with Kitchener resident Chris Hemmerich. With several competitors close at his heels, Kim pulled ahead through the third round by carding a solid 67, and wouldnt relinquish his lead down the home stretch.
I isolated myself out there, and focused only on myself and my game, said Kim, who marked the most birdies of the tournament with 19. It had to become just me against the golf course in order to get the best possible result.
Kim teed up his final round with a three stroke advantage, and his steady performance throughout the day kept him there through to his final putt on the 18th green. He carded a pair of birdies and a pair of bogeys, methodically placing shots on the fairway and playing it safe for an even-par result.
I really had to keep myself in the game and being three up I couldnt afford to make any mistakes, he explained. The course is fairly straightforward, as long as you are in the fairway, you have a good chance for par or birdie.
With record-breaking temperatures scorching the course through all four days of competition, the heat became another obstacle for Kim to contend with. Despite forgetting to pack shorts for the week, he managed to stay focused on his game and finished with a cumulative score of 277 (69-69-67-72), -11. Kim will now prepare for the Canadian Junior Boys championship before heading to the University of Detroit Mercy on a golf scholarship in the fall.
Runner-up honours and the silver medal went to 15-year-old Bryce Evon of Windsor. The GAO Public Player made a solid run up the leaderboard into second place, closing out the event with a total score of 280 (73-70-67-70) to finish at eight under par for his best ever result at a provincial championship.
Westmount Golf and Country Club member and second round co-leader Chris Hemmerich rounded out the top three to finish at five-under par. The London resident delivered the tournament low score with a 66 on Wednesday, setting a new course record at the newly renovated 6571-yard Bay of Quinte. Hemmerich finished with a total score of 283 (72-66-71-74), five-under par.
Stratfords Daniel Wilson finished fourth at 284 (-4), followed by LaSalle resident Rick Voyvodic who tied with Team Ontario member Michael Nedoszytko of Toronto for fifth place.
The Investors Group Ontario Junior Boys Championship serves as a qualifier for the Canadian Junior Boys Championship set to be played August 1-5 at Morgan Creek Golf Course in South Surrey, British Columbia. Kim, Evon, and Hemmerich will represent Ontario in the inter-provincial team component of the competition. Those competitors who finished the provincial championship with results of +15 or lower will also earn a quota spots into the national championship in August.

The Investors Group Ontario Junior Boys’ championship is contested annually and was played for the 89th time in 2011. Notable past winners include 2003 Masters Champion Mike Weir (1988), Ontario amateur golf legend Gary Cowan (1956), Nationwide and PGA Tour member Jon Mills (1996), Matt McQuillan (1999) and 2009 NCAA Champion Matt Hill (2007).
