I almost don’t believe it…….
The Owen Sound Attack are the Ontario Hockey League Champions.
They won their first ever championship based out of Owen Sound after 22 years in the city, good years, true, but no other year can compare to this one, certainly not at this moment.
They won it in Game 7. On the road, no less. In OVERTIME. Against the St Michael’s Majors, a exceptional team, a team I’d still consider to be a favorite head to head with the Attack.
They won it in the sold out Hershey Center. Sold out because the people of Owen Sound, Grey & Bruce and beyond, packed it to root for this conceivably once-in-a-lifetime moment.
The overtime game winner was scored by Jarrod Maidens. A kid. A talented kid, who got two goals in the biggest game of the year, but a kid, who I’m not sure can drive a car just yet.
It was a tremendous victory for the boys on the team, older or younger, a sweet victory for the ownership group and the hockey management team including the hardworking athletic therapist, assistant and physical trainer.
And based on the trip home, the Owen Sound cash flushed into Orangeville & Mulmur, based on the people who lined the side of Highway 10 in small communities in our region, those who took in the parade and the quickly put together reception at the Bayshore, this was a day & night, like almost no other in the history and sports history of Owen Sound
I almost don’t believe it.
