There’s no getting around this.
Put quite simply, today is a very big day in the history of the city of Owen Sound, and for the surrounding region, from a sports standpoint
I’m not saying there haven’t been big sports days for the city and region in the past in various sporting activities
And I’m not totally prepared to say this is the biggest day in the history of local hockey.
But if this isn’t the biggest day in hockey history, or in sports history, within the city limits and for the communities that make up our region……..it’s gotta be close.
Tonight, and truthfully I’ve done my darndest to avoid taking this avenue, but tonight is huge.
The Owen Sound Attack host the Windsor Spitfires in Game 5 of the Ontario Hockey League’s Western Conference Championship.
Owen Sound leads the best of 7; 3 games to 1 over the back to back defending Memorial Cup Champion Spitfires.
So a win tonight and the Attack franchise advances to the OHL Final for the only time in their 22 year history
Plus, and this is the road I’ve avoided at all costs, but with St Mike’s winning the East last night, it means the eventual winner of the Western Conference not only advances to the OHL Final but also gains a berth in the Memorial Cup at Mississauga along with the hosting Majors.
That’s big.
Is it as big as the 1924 or 1927 Greys ?
As Big as 1950 Cresents or the 51 Mercury’s ?
We’ll debate that some other day, but for now there’s no denying that today and tonight are truly significant to the sporting history and the overall history of this city and region.
See you tonight.
I’m Fred Wallace
