Everybody has a good laugh at the CFL’s expense.
They mock the single point, they lament the fact that only one Roughrider team now exists and they ridicule the playoff format whereby the last place team in one division can cross over and be in the other division’s playoff if their record is sufficient.
But maybe the CFL is on to something.
Case in point, the Ontario Hockey League.
With its current system of the top 8 in both the East & the West making their respective Conference playoffs, the OHL has a traditional post season.
But over the last decade no one can deny the Western Conference has been the better Conference by far and as a result, a non playoff team in the West has garnered more points than playoff participants in the East.
This year, Sarnia & Sault Ste Marie missed the playoffs in the West, but their point total would have been enough to qualify in the East.
Heck, until they both stumbled in the stretch, they both could have challenged for 5th in the East.
So would the OHL ever consider having a crossover team qualify based on points if a non playoff team in one Conference had more points than a playoff team on the other side ?
Likely not.
That kind of ridiculous concept could only exist in the Canadian Football League- right ?
