Apr 18 Tom Cheek
It’s baseball season, and for many years, the sound of Tom Cheek’s voice doing Blue Jays Baseball on the radio was the sound of baseball in Ontario, if not in Canada.
Hearing Tom Cheek meant Spring was here.
It meant Summer was unfolding.
And in some special cases, Tom Cheek was the sound of Fall as it pertains to playoff baseball.
When the Blue Jays won the World Series in 1992, Cheek collaborated with Howard Berger on a book called ” Road To Glory “.
For the sake of nostalgia, I picked it up again for reading material on a trip, and truthfully, I enjoyed it and appreciated it far more the second time around.
There are some tremendous pieces in ” Road To Glory ” that Cheek had a front row seat for
The coming of the Jays, that first game, the American league east pennant in 1985, the Tigers series in 87, more playoffs until finally they won the World Series beating the Atlanta Braves in 1992.
Tom Cheek died in 2005. Has it been 6 years ?
It’s strange, though gone for more than half a decade, his voice lives with great memories of Blue Jays Baseball.
