We talk frequently about the resurgence in fastball in Owen Sound, how in a span of less than 5 years, the Selects organization has blossomed from a Midget team to what appears to be an organization with a Senior entry, potentially two Junior Clubs this year plus the existing Midget Club for 2011.
Plus there are areas of growth, if not a potential rebirth of fastball, with the Bluewater League, the Owen Sound League, Chesley and Highland Hills, all experiencing various levels of growth
But the question today is, who looks after the games. ?
We’re told there is a shortage of umpires for the sport, some will say a critical shortage of umpires.
And, according to what I’ve seen and what I’m told, the existing group of umpires are mostly experienced, so not only is there a new for new umpires, but also youthful umpires.
To that end, there a Softball Ontario Level One Umpires Clinic has been scheduled for Saturday April 9th at Notre Dame School in Owen Sound.
The clinic, which is designed for all forms of ball, will run from 9 am to 4 pm.
The organizers are requesting participants register in advance to assist with their clinic preparation.
To pre-register, you can call Paul at 519-371-8888.
Remember; no umpire, no game
I’m Fred Wallace
