Earlier in the year, we applauded the Walkerton Capitals Senior Hockey Club, and the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks, their opponents one night, as the organizations played a great regular season game with proceeds being directed to a special cause.
On the night of Saturday January 22nd, the Capitals blanked the Winterhawks 2-0 in Walkerton, but far more significant was the total of $ 5,000 that was generated to assist the Rutledge Family and 10 year old Justine Rutledge who has childhood leukemia.
Coming up in Walkerton in March, is another unique game and fundraiser.
The Referees Association in the Bluewater Athletic Boys Basketball League are going to conduct an All Star Game on Thursday March 3rd at Walkerton District
There will be a Junior All Star Game & a Senior All Star Game with a Skills Competition wedged into half time for both games.
The fundraising aspect is in the form of the admission charge.
To watch the games, the Referees are asking for either a toonie, or a non perishable food item, or both if you’re so inclined, all of which will be donated to the Food Bank at Walkerton.
Next year, the plan is to have the game in Owen Sound and rotate it from year to year.
But this year, it’s Walkerton that is making news with a variety of noble fundraisers for great causes.
I’m Fred Wallace
