Another in the series of seasonal hockey books to reach Bayshore Broadcasting is ” The Final Call ” by referee Kerry Fraser.
Fraser, who spent some of his junior years playing hockey at Collingwood with the Blues, went on to have a lengthy 30 year officiating career in the NHL.
Like all officials there were controversial moments; one doesn’t have to go to far beyond the famous Wayne Gretzky high stick on Doug Gilmour in the 1993 playoffs, to stir the emotions of fans.
But with Fraser, there were many colorful moments as well, most of which were provided by his hair style, which at times was almost outlandish.
” The Final Call ” is a 30 year journey through the National Hockey League from a referee’s standpoint, specifically highlighting the most memorable occasions in the most memorable games and most historic venues.
Recently, during an interview with Bayshore Broadcasting, Fraser was asked, what he will do now, now that he’s done blowing the whistle.
In his late 50’s, the assumption is that Fraser is far too young to retire full time, and there would be a number of options available for him within hockey.
Interestingly enough, at the moment Fraser is most keen on educating players, and the hockey world in general, about the dangers of hits to the head.
For someone who took a long time to wear a helmet and sometimes seemed more concerned about his appearance, especially his hair, it sounds like Kerry Fraser has a clear idea of what comes next.
