There’s an interesting concept being floated by Softball Canada as it pertains to the 2011 Canadian Senior Men’s Fastball Championship Tournament.
The Verge Investment Selects will host the National Men’s Championship Tournament August 28th to September 4th at Duncan McLellan Park in Owen Sound.
The concept being investigated is whether or not to expand the format and include a second championship within the week.
At the elite level, it’s expected there will be close to a dozen teams competing from across Canada, including the Owen Sound Verge Investment Selects.
The expanded format is considering adding a Tier 2 format, that would allow a second level of teams from across Canada to stage their own National Championships.
A perfect example of a Tier 2 type team would be the Port Elgin Blue Devils.
The Blue Devils, like the Alvinston Indians, or Elmira Cubs, or any teams of that ilk across Canada, are good, but likely lack the depth of a full scale pitching corps and as a result, they can’t compete against the deep teams.
Fair enough.
But if a Tier 2 system is incorporated, where one, maybe two pitchers can carry a team against similar competition, it could become a marvellous addition to the Canadian Championships, not to mention a further bonus for the economy in the region next summer.
It’s not a certainty, but it certainly is an interesting proposal.
