Went to my first hockey game of the new season last night, taking in St Mike’s & the Attack at the Harry Lumley-Bayshore Community Center.
In fairness, this was an Ontario Hockey League Exhibition match and the Attack don’t play for keeps for another two weeks when they open the season at Guelph.
However, for the Owen Sound Greys of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League and most of the teams in the Western Junior C Hockey League, it gets real starting tonight.
The Greys make their season and home debut tonight after a one year sabbatical when they host the Brantford Golden Eagles at the Lum.
There’s no question the Greys recent history has been a struggle including their absence last year, but a turnaround has to start somewhere and hopefully, that begins this evening.
Meanwhile in Junior C, there are games tonight at Walkerton & Wingham.
In Wingham, the Ironmen go against the Mitchell Hawks while in Walkerton, the defending champion Hawks host the Hanover Barons in a rematch of what was a terrific Championship Series last year.
It’s seems early for meaningful junior hockey, but the reality for the Greys and the Regional Junior C teams is that it all begins tonight.
I’m Fred Wallace
