Terrill Samuel Earns Third Investors Group Ontario Womens Mid-Amateur Title
Bath, ON Nineteen years after her first victory, Etobicokes Terrill Samuel earned her third Investors Group Ontario Womens Mid-Amateur title on Thursday at Loyalist Country Club in Bath, Ontario.
The Weston Golf and Country Club member went wire-to-wire in the 2010 championship, leading the field of Ontarios best amateurs age 25 and older through all 54 holes.
Samuel delivered the best score of the tournament in Tuesdays opening round, finishing the day with a one-under par 71. She extended her confident, consistent style of play through the second and third rounds, delivering an even par 72 and a two-over 74 for a total score of 217 (+1).
I actually wasnt driving the ball as well as I would have liked, but all of the par fives on the course were definitely reachable for me, said Samuel, who favoured her fairway woods off the tee.
Blustery winds met the tournament leaders as they made their way down the back nine on Thursday, heightening the difficulty of the 5678 yard layout. Samuel got into trouble on 12, settling for a double bogey, and missed a close putt for par on 17, but was met with raucous applause from the gallery as she placed a 30 foot putt within inches of the cup and tapped in for birdie on the final hole.
Samuel closed out the tournament with a three stroke victory, hoisting the trophy for the third time after her first win in 1991 and her second in 2000. Both previous victories came when the Mid-Amateur division title was contested as part of the Ontario Womens Amateur, so Samuel was particularly thrilled to come out on top in the existing format as a standalone event.
This is such a fun event to compete in, and it really feels like this is the first time Ive won, said Samuel, who also has two Ontario Womens Amateur victories and an Ontario Womens Match Play championship under her belt.
The 49 year-old will try to add a senior title to her long list of accomplishments when she turns 50 in April.
Usually, you dont want to age yourself, but Ive really been counting down the years to when I can play at the senior level, so Im really looking forward to next season.”
Local favourite Patricia Hogeboom of Kingston earned runner-up honours after finishing with a total score of 220, four-over par. The Cataraqui Golf and Country Club member delivered a strong performance down the final stretch, narrowly missing a number of difficult birdie attempts and nailing a 25-footer on 16. Hogeboom, who had former Ontario Junior Boys champion Brad Revell as her caddy, finished with a final round 74, adding to her second round 72 and opening 74.
The bronze medal went to Uxbridge resident Gail Pimm, who came in at eight-over par. The recent runner-up at the Ontario Senior Womens Amateur made a move up the leaderboard after starting the final day tied for sixth place, and finished with a total score of 224 (74-77-73).
Londons Sue Postian finished fourth at 225 (+9) while Ancaster resident Jennifer Lochhead rounded out the top five at 227 (+11).
First played in 1989, the Investors Group Ontario Womens Mid-Amateur Championship is a 54-hole event open to female amateur golfers age 25 and older. Including Samuel, only six golfers have claimed the title in the history of the tournament. Liz Kolar captured the inaugural event, Gayle Borthwick won in 1992 and 1993, Samuel previously won in 1991 and 2000, Margaret Matthews in 2009, and Ontario and Canadian Golf Hall of Fame member Mary Ann Hayward has come out on top an impressive fourteen times.
