Very seldom, if ever, in this segment do you hear me going on at length about professional sports holdouts or the various financial aspects that dominate today’s sports coverage of the big time.
Quite frankly, it’s boring.
Ala Shakespeare, the play has always been the thing for me, and I care little about who wants what, who needs what and who makes what.
Furthermore, the never ending sequence of Pro Sport Money Talk bears little significance or relevance to you and I, and our day to day existence.
The reality for almost all of us, and certainly for our sports teams, is that money at our level is far more crucial than it is for Brett Favre or Ilya Kovalchuk, to use two current examples.
As we speak, both the Port Elgin Blue Devils and the Owen Sound Selects are in Midland, Michigan at the ISC Fastball Championship, while the Owen Sound Woodsmen are in Burnaby, B.C. for the President Cup Lacrosse Championship.
Who pays for that ?
Yes, these teams have title sponsors, local sponsors and various fundraisers to assist with their programs, but can those measures come close to covering having 15 ball players each in Michigan, or 25 lacrosse players in B.C. ?
I don’t think so.
So with no offense to the agents and players and the elite world of high pay-high profile sports, I’m honestly far more interested, if not far more concerned, about how the teams representing my area are making ends meet while they compete for World and National titles this week on both sides of the border.
I’m Fred Wallace
