Mary Ann Hayward Roars into Early Lead at Investors Group Ontario Senior Womens Championship
Georgetown, ON – Canadian Golf Hall of Fame member and fourteen-time Ontario Womens Mid-Amateur champion Mary Ann Hayward made her debut in the senior ranks on Wednesday, firing a three-under par 69 to take the early lead at the Investors Group Ontario Senior Womens Championship.
Hayward is making her return to competitive golf in Ontario this week at her home course, The Club at North Halton. The five-time Ontario Womens Amateur champion, who recently captured the Quebec Mid-Amateur title in June, carded six birdies against a trio of bogeys to earn a four-stroke lead over the rest of the field.
Second place belongs to Stouffville, Ontarios Gail Pimm, who is also making her senior debut. The Mill Run Golf and Country Club member had an up and down day with five birdies and six bogeys to close out the round at 73, one-over par.
2006 champion Cheryll Damphouse of Amherstburg is tied for third place alongside Port Hopes Jeanne Beaith. Both golfers carded identical three-over par 75s to sit six strokes off the lead.
Defending two-time winner Ivy Steinberg of Cedar Valley sits tied for fifth place after firing a solid four-over par 76 that included an eagle on the par 5, 407 yard seventeenth hole. Also in fifth place is Ginny Parks of Carlisle and Sue Postian of London.
The Investors Group Ontario Senior Womens Championship is being contested this year for the 32nd time. The second of three rounds will commence at 7:30 am on Thursday, with a cut to take place following the day to the low 54 golfers and ties. The 2010 champion will be crowned at the conclusion of the event on Friday afternoon.
