There are very few items in sports that elicit as much discussion as the anthems played before sporting events.
We all remember Mary Ann O’Dowd, I think, the lady who mangled the O’Canada at a Yankee-Jays game and how outraged broadcaster Don Chevrier was.
Most recently in the spring, the Philadelphia Flyers presentation of ” God Bless America ” featuring Lauren Hart & the image of Kate Smith had people choosing sides.
My personal favorite was in Saginaw, prior to an Attack game with the Spirit, when a local performer from the Michigan city attempted O’Canada, with the lyrics written on cards, but obviously no musical notes to follow
Bear with me here, but his rendition went something like this…..
O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command…..
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
Good Bless the anthem.
