Walker Holds Lead Heading Into the Final Round at Ontario Am
Sudbury, ON: Second round leader Jace Walker of St Thomas held his lead after the third round of the Investors Group Ontario Amateur Championship thanks to a steady round of 71. He now sits at five under par (211) for the Championship and in sole possession of first place.
Under overcast skies and some sporadic rain showers at Idylwylde Golf and Country Club, Walker, 24, played some excellent golf. The St Thomas G&CC member carded four birdies on the day including a great recovery birdie on the twelfth hole. After hitting his tee shot into the woods he punched back out into the fairway which left him with a decent look at the green of the par five. He then stepped up and hit his approach to four feet for an easy birdie putt. Two late bogeys brought him back to five under but he still leads the field by a stroke heading into Fridays final round.
For the second consecutive day Brett Cairns of Courland sit in second place however this time he is alone. Cairns birdied the first to get off to a great start however bogeys at six and seven left him one over after nine. On the back side he made four birdies which overshadowed his sole bogey on route to a third round 70 and a three day total of four under par (212). The Otter Creek member will try to chase down Walker when play begins on Friday and they tee it up together for the second straight day.
Walker and Cairns are not alone atop the leaderboard as Matt Hoffman of Thornhill strung together another solid round on Thursday and sits alone in third at three under par (213) for the week and two off the pace. The 2008 champion Dave Bunker of Woodbridge is also in striking distance in fourth place at two under (214). Finally Mckenzie Hughes of Dundas will look to match his third round 68 tomorrow and throw his hat in the ring. Hughes sits alone in fifth at one under (215)
The remaining field of 60 golfers will play one more round to ultimately determine the 2010 champion. Final round action will get under way on Friday morning with the final pairing of Walker, Cairns and Hoffman teeing off at 10:40am.
Following the completion of play on Friday there will be a formal awards presentation where the Champion will be presented with the Gary Cowan trophy and distinction of being the Ontario Amateur Champion for 2010. The top four finishers will also be recognized and named to the provincial team that will represent the province at the Canadian Amateur in London and compete for the Willingdon Cup.
The Investors Group Ontario Amateur is conducted by the Golf Association of Ontario with support provincial volunteers and the Idylwylde G&CC members and staff.
