Budd & Kempa Share the Lead at Ontario Amateur
Sudbury, ON: After the opening round Russell Budd of Toronto and Zack Kempa of Brantford are tied atop the leaderboard at the Investors Group Ontario Amateur Championship at Idylwylde Golf & Country Club in Sudbury.
Under very warm yet windy conditions Budd negotiated his way around the course in fine fashion to finish two under par (70). The Bayview CC member got off to a great start with birdies at the first and fourth holes to finish off the first nine at two under. Steady play on the tough back nine secured him an even par 36 and a tie for the lead.
Kempa carded his two under 70 thanks to six solid birdies, which offset four bogeys. The Brantford G&CC member started on the back nine and had an up and down nine holes but ended up one under when he made the turn. He had a very solid last nine holes with birdies at one and nine to finish two under for the round and tied with Budd.
Close on the leaders heals are Brett Cairns of Courtland and Jeff Clarridge or Barrie who both fired opening round 71 (one under par). Cairns put together a great front nine with an eagle at one and birdies at six and nine to finish three under after nine.
Second round action will get under way on Wednesday morning. After the second round the field will be reduced to the low sixty and ties who will compete on Thursday and Friday to ultimately decide the 2010 champion.
The Investors Group Ontario Amateur is conducted by the Golf Association of Ontario with support provincial volunteers and the Idylwylde G&CC members and staff.
