About 20 people ranging in age from 3 to 70 lost their locks in this year’s Cops for Cancer Shave Off in Hanover..
Organizer and participant police Sergeant Rob DeGroot notes Friday night’s event was all for a great cause.
He says 100 per cent of the money raised goes towards children cancer research as well as support for their families.
10 year old team captain Anna Schmidt was diagnosed with leukemia five years ago.
Anna’s mom Nancy Schmidt calls it heart warming to see the community come together to help families like hers that are facing a difficult challenge.
Thankfully it’s been three years since Annas last chemo treatment and she is doing very well.
Every strand of hair is being put to good use this year.
While all the long natural hair will be used to make wigs for cancer patients, the short and coloured hair now also has a use.
A local hair salon is shipping the hair off to the Gulf of Mexico as it will be used to help soak up the toxic oil spill.
One pound of human hair can pick up about a quart of oil.
Over the last 11 years, the Hanover Cops for Cancer event has raised about 160 thousand dollars.
