The community is rallying for victims of April’s apartment fire in Owen Sound where ten families were left homeless.
A fundraising BBQ is being held at a neighbouring apartment complex at 385 11th Street West on Saturday from 11 AM to 3 PM.
Everyone found temporary housing immediately after the fire but the challenge has been to find a permanent affordable home.
United Way Executive Director Francesca Dobbyn says the rent was extremely affordable and it hasn’t been easy to find replacement housing.
Only a third of the families had insurance — so the community has been holding fundraising events and collecting donations of house wares and clothing for the past several weeks.
Dobbyn says there are plenty of community organizations helping out during the BBQ including Nathaniel’s, The Salvation Army, The Adult Learning Centre, Royal Lepage and Chapman’s Ice Cream..who knows what its like to lose just about everything in a fire.
They’re donating 500 small pots of ice cream to tomorrow’s event.
Several schools have also raised money.
Dobbyn says to date they’ve collected more than 6 thousand dollars and counting.
The fire caused 750 thousand dollars in damage and the official cause was deemed undetermined.
