The 18th annual Crime Stoppers of Grey Bruce Golf Tournament was staged Thursday at Chippewa Golf and Country in Southampton.
The event — which has been held at Chippewa since Day 1 — raised $16,500 this year and over the course of its history has contributed more than 330 thousand dollars to Crime Stoppers of Grey Bruce.
This is the major fundraiser each year for the local chapter of Crimestoppers and the funds are used to continue their operation, which takes anonymous phone tips and uses those tips to solve crimes in our region.
Tournament co-chair Evan Hayter was pleased with the amount of money generated again this year by the tournament which included more than 150 golfers and featured former NHL’er Peter Mahovlich as the guest speaker.
Hayter believes Crimestoppers has a region appeal due to the nature of the operation and the success they enjoy throughout Grey & Bruce.
That appeal explains to a large extent why so many golfers participate year after year, and why corporate support for the tournament is so generous throughout the region.
Hayter relates they add new wrinkles each year to the event, but admits there’s no inclination to try and grow the event any bigger or expand the format, saying he’s gratified by the success of the annual tournament.
