Several hundred Grey Bruce high school students are about to find out about a career path many may have never considered.
A one-day “Waves of Opportunity” Conference is being held in Walkerton on Tuesday to help them explore different careers in water management.
Co-ordinator Bruce Davidson says this is all part of the 10th anniversary events associated with the Walkerton Water tragedy.
He says Walkerton has now emerged as a centre for water excellence with the Clean water Centre and there many skilled jobs available in the whole area of water management and treatment that many young people don’t know about.
Davidson says the day long session at Walkerton District Secondary School will expose the students to all sorts careers from water treatment experts, to post secondary institutions that specialize in environmental technician courses.
In all about 25 different groups will be making presentations to the students.
He says in addition, the students will hear from the founder of Ryan’s Well, a foundation dedicated to bringing clean water to people living in Africa.
Davidson says Ryan Hreljac — at the age of 6 — starting raising money to build a well for a small town in Africa.
He says that single effort now haw expanded to a foundation that to date is responsible for the construction of 564 wells in 16 developing countries providing clean water to more than 670 thousand people.
Ryan will speak to the students during the day, and will give a free public talk Tuesday at the Victoria Jubilee Hall at 7 PM.
