A big celebration in Collingwood today.
Bayshore Broadcasting News Reporter Catherine Thompson tells us over four hundred people turned out for the grand opening of the new library on Ste. Marie Street.
The 7.8 million dollar building is the first LEEDs gold certified library in Ontario.
There were many speakers at the ceremony that closed down part of Ste. Marie Street for a few hours this afternoon.
Simcoe Grey MPP Jim Wilson, Simcoe County Warden Cal Patterson and author and Canada’s most decorated citizen, Major-General Richard Rohmer took to the podium leading up to Mayor Chris Carrier’s address and ribbon cutting by council and library officials.
Major-General Rohmer tells us he has special ties to this new library because he happens to live just around the corner and has 27 of his books available to be borrowed from the library.
Rohmer says he was honoured to be one of the speakers and is proud such a building now exisits in his community.
The three storey building that houses the library and municipal offices actually opened to the public on April 6th.
And library officials say attendance has grown 300 percent leading up to the ribbon cutting ceremony.
