Some local winners in the latest round of the Premiers Awards for Agri-Food Innovation Excellence.
Agriculture Minister Carol Mitchell announced the winners from this region in Wingham on Wednesday.
The local winners are Smiths Apples and Farm Market in Port Elgin.
Beginning in 1995 Steve Smith built a high-density, high production crop of apples in Bruce County.
As a result of his production practices, Smiths farm is in demand as a tour destination.
Another winner is Global Fruit in Clarksburg.
The Grey County apple grower has designed and built a sprayer that saves money, protects the environment and is less noisy than anything else available in Canada.
Created to operate in Marius Botdens high-density orchards, the sprayer reduces the amount of pesticide by 30 per cent.
The third local winner is Lewis Land & Stock in Holstein.
Locally produced corn fed Ontario lamb and goat are more readily available in grocery chain stores thanks to the work of Lewis Land & Stock.
Each of the winners received five thousand dollars for their innovations.
