This is the first official holiday weekend of the summer months, and Police forces across the region will be out in full force to protect us from ourselves.
OPP Sergeant Dave Rektor says in Grey, Bruce, Huron and Simcoe Counties, officers will be out patrolling the major and secondary highways looking for aggressive drivers, people who have been drinking and driving and speeders.
In addition officers form the OPP Marine Unit will be out on the waters of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay and other waterways to help prevent drowning and other incidents.
Sergeant Rektor also says this year its the law that all power boat operators must have their Boater Operating Certificate and police will be checking to ensure boaters are properly licensed.
He says they also will be checking to make sure everyone in the boat has a certified flotation device, and no one is drinking and operating a boat.
Rektor warns the water is still very cold and hypothermia is a real concern if someone falls in.
Not only will the police be patrolling the highways, trails and water ways, Rektor says they also will be in the air assisting officers on the ground in the hunt for aggressive drivers and speeders.
Last year, during the Victoria Day Weekend,2 people were killed in 2 separate collisions on OPP patrolled roads.
There were no watercraft or ATV fatalities reported.
