West Grey has proposed a number of changes to its fire coverage areas — and it has caught the attention of Hanover.
The proposed West Grey fire coverage changes will have a huge impact on the Hanover Fire Department.
Fire Chief Ken Roseborough says if the proposal goes through — Hanover’s coverage area will be reduced by 90 per cent.
Currently the town is responsible for fire protection to a large section of West Grey stretching from the outskirts of town all the way to Allan Park.
Under the changes — Hanover would no longer be responsible for fires or accidents that occur just minutes from the department at locations like Hanover Honda or at the homes located along the ten four junction. (where county roads 10 and 4 meet.)
The proposed fire changes will also mean the loss of 37 thousand dollars in West Grey fire protection coverage fees to the Hanover Fire Department.
But even with a loss of those fees — Roseborough says they need all of their staff and he doesn’t think they will have any cutbacks.
Roseborough also suspects the changes may raise fire insurance rates for some West Grey residents who will no longer fall under Hanover’s jurisdiction.
