Owen Sound council has approved a one thousand dollar sponsorship for the upcoming 50th anniversary reunion at West Hill Secondary School.
The sponsorship was recommended by Steve Furness, the city’s manager of economic development and tourism.
He said in a presentation to council that the recommendation was consistent with the support given to Owen Sound’s 150th anniversary Homecoming in 2007 and past OSCVI reunions.
City support would also include a free listing on Owen Sound’s tourism special events calendar, event signs at the city’s entrances, tourism e-mail blasts and door prizes.
The reunion, to mark the 50th anniversary of the opening of the school in 1960, is slated for the Canada Day weekend.
But the recommendation to sponsor the event was not unanimously supported by all members of council.
Councillors Tom Pink and David Adair both say they do not believe special events in the city should be given grants because the funding simply isn’t there for it.
Although this is a sponsorship, it would be paid out of the grants budget.
A previous motion by Councillor Deb Haswell to provide two thousand dollars — double Furness’ recommendation — was turned down.
