Hanover is getting behind two of its exceptional athletes as they prepare for the Special Olympics Canadian Summer Games this July in London Ontario.
The town is spending 500 dollars in total to assist with the costs for Michael Bailey and Susan Penfold.
Bailey has been selected to compete in the running long jump, high jump, shot putt, 400 meter and the 100 meter runs.
Penfold will be competing in 10 pin bowling.
Mayor Kathi Maskell is very optimistic about Bailey and Penfold’s chances.
It was only a few years ago that Bailey traveled all the way to China to represent Canada in the Special Olympics.
She says its important Hanover rally around these two athletes and support them in this very exciting venture.
The cost per athlete to attend is one thousand dollars.
To date with Hanover’s donation the athletes are still 975 dollars shy of covering their costs.
Hanover and Area Special Olympics Community Coordinator Brian Carr says he has approached a number of businesses and community groups for sponsorship dollars with very little success.
Because Bailey has been training with the Port Elgin Track and Field Club, they have graciously offered to pay half his registration fee.
Bailey and Penfold will be representing Ontario Region 4 during the summer games which will be held from July 11th to 17th.
