A lengthy review of pathology cases handled by Doctor Barry Sawka at Grey Bruce health services is now over.
More than two thousand cases involving 944 patients from 2004 to 2008 were examined by a group from North Bay hospital.
President and CEO of Grey Bruce Health Services, Maureen Solecki, says the review was triggered two years ago, when two missed breast cancer diagnoses were discovered during routine quality assurance testing.
At the time in 2008, an internal review of 600 of Doctor Sawka’s most recent cases found an error rate of six percent — while the normal error rate for pathologists is about one percent.
As a result of the lengthy review, a dozen amended reports were issued.
Solecki says seven patients received further treatment, three patients did not and two patients would not be located for follow-up.
The seven patients included the two initial missed cancers, and one more missed cancer patient.
No deaths have been attributed to the work of Doctor Barry Sawka who is no longer with Grey Bruce Health Services.
Maureen Solecki is unaware of any lawsuits against GBHS as a result of the pathologists miss-diagnoses.
She says the hospital has placed the highest priority on patient safety and quality of care.
