Walkerton is marking the 10th anniversary of the water tragedy this weekend, but residents haven’t forgotten how important clean water is to a community.
In fact, the town started up a “Walkerton to Haiti clean water project” this spring which is designed to provide aid to the earthquake ravaged nation.
Bruce Davidson is one of the people behind the initiative and says when people have clean safe water, they can be healthy enough to begin to recover and rebuild from the earthquake.
Walkerton is partnering with Lifewater Canada which is working in Haiti, to provide emergency drinking water filtration in refugee communities.
He says Lifewater has vital experience in Haiti with the geology, culture, terrain, hydrogeology and local contacts.
Davidson says Walkerton has vital knowledge they have gained about drinking water, supply and treatment they want to share with the people of Haiti.
