They say as you get older, you become wiser, but when it comes to fire safety, that isn’t always the case.
As a result the Paisley and area fire department is hosting a one-hour information session for seniors on fire safety tomorrow.
Fire Chief Rob Bonderud says the program they will be presenting has been developed by the Ontario Fire Marshall’s office, to help seniors with fire and general safety around their homes.
Bonderud says the presentation will look at, among other things, cooking safely and smoking safely in your home and how to check smoke alarms to see if they’re still working.
He says under current Ontario legislation there are four mandatory requirements and one of them is a simplified risk assessment in the municipality.
Bonderud says when they did the assessment they realized fire safety for seniors was the biggest risk because the Paisley area has more seniors per capita than the rest of the province averages.
Tomorrow’s “Older and Wiser for Older Adults” fire safety session gets underway at 1 PM at the Paisley Palace in the fairgrounds.
It’s free to all seniors.
Refreshments will be provided as well as gifts for all in attendance.
