The 2010 Bluewater Track & Field Championships begin today.
The event runs through this afternoon, takes a break and then resumes tomorrow morning at 10 am.
The Davidson Complex in Kincardine is the sight for the annual Championship, which pits the top performers from close to a dozen Bluewater High Schools in head to head competition.
I’ve felt for a long time that the Track & Field Championship is the most legitimate gauge of athletics in Bluewater.
With no offence to any of the other Bluewater sports, the track and field Championship gives the most student-athletes at any given high school, the most opportunity to perform for themselves, for their school and for their community.
First, due to a decline in interest over the past decade or so, the number of participants per event per school has been expanded. That opens the door of opportunity.
Second, each individual athlete has a limit of 3 events they can compete in, which means your best athlete can’t compete in any more disciplines than your novice competitor and that too keeps the door of opportunity open.
Yes, it ‘s nice to win & I know in advance that the athletes from Saugeen District & Kincardine will do exceptionally well.
But winning can be measured in various terms and the more participants from Bluewater, the more opportunity to see if an individual student athlete can run faster, throw farther, and jump higher and longer than they’ve ever done before.
It’s why I love the 2 day Bluewater Track & Field Meet that begins today in Kincardine.
