Despite flight delays and cancellations for European flights, the Chesley and Walkerton high school students visiting Holland have made it home safely.
Chesley District High School Principal Don Matheson says they did have a delay when leaving.
But he says the delay was only a few hours and they were still able to make it home yesterday.
Flights between Europe and North America were re-routed over the weekend because of a two thousand kilometre long cloud of ash from the Iceland volcano, but it mostly affected Spain and Portugal.
As for the trip, Matheson says it was a great learning experience for the students.
They were observing the 65th anniversary of Holland’s liberation by the Canadian Armed Forces.
Matheson says the most moving ceremony was a silent march by 15 hundred Canadian students to Gross Peak Cemetary, which left some veterans in tears.
They also visited the main concentration camp outside of Berlin and Anne Frank’s house, as well as Vimy Ridge.
Matheson says the students now have a better understanding of the Holocaust story and the horrors of war.
The students also took in some sight-seeing in Paris.
