Young musicians involved in a unique program in Markdale are tuning up.
The Markdale Arts For Youth will hold their annual spring concert tonight.
Spokesperson David Fries says about 60 kids will be taking the stage and performing a wide variety of music.
Fries says most of their students come from Beavercrest Community School.
Markdale Arts For Youth has partnered with the school to offer kids in Grades 5 to 8 free instruction and the use of a rental instrument of their choice.
Fries says in return, the children are required to volunteer one hour in the school or community for every hour of musical instruction they receive.
Fries says the students involved in the program are blossoming and making strides in their self image and even school work.
He says the benefits are endless and he hopes to see the program expanded to other local communities.
The Markdale program is now 3 years old and a major announcement about its future will be made at tonight’s event.
The spring concert starts at 7 o’clock at Annesley United Church in Markdale.
Admission is free but donations are welcome.
