The rainy, cool weather didn’t prevent protestors from celebrating the anniversary of the start of the demonstrations against Site 41.
It was one year ago today that a group of First Nations people took part in a walk for water and decided to camp out across from the dump in Tiny Township.
The campout in protest was supposed to last a weekend, but went for 137 days.
Anne Ritchie-Nahuis was one of the people charged with mischief in the protests.
She says its was a struggle but seeing fellow protestors again reminds her of the day in September Simcoe County council voted to stop construction.
As for the charges against her, Ritchie-Nahuis says they have been stayed and will be dropped as long as she exhibits good behaviour to December.
But she says the county could still take her and Vicki Monague to court, but there’s been no word on when that could happen.
Today’s water ceremony had to be moved from site 41 to a barn down the road because of the high winds and rain, but there were still about 60 people there to celebrate the anniversary.
Ritchie-Nahuis says their fight isn’t over yet, they’re still fighting to get the certificate of approval for Site 41 revoked so the land can’t be used again as a landfill or any similar use.
