A group of concerned residents want Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh Council to hold-off on plans to expand their landfill.
The ACW landfill was scheduled to close in 6 years, consultants hired by council, suggest it could stay open for another 60-years.
The R.J. Burnside & Associates report says the municipality could increase the waste footprint without increasing the size of the dump site.
Karen Culbrit — who is leading the community group — wants more studies done before a final decision is made.
The group is concerned about environmental damages the proposed plan could have on the area.
Maps done by the Ausable-Bayfield Maitland-Valley ‘Drinking Water Source Protection Agency’ show the current site sits on a highly vulnerable aquifer recharge area.
Those maps were not included in the consultant’s report.
At the request of the group, ACW council is going to hold a public meeting at the Dungannon Agriculture Hall on May 26th.
