A 37 million dollar contract has been signed by Bruce Power with a Swedish firm, that will take “mildly radioactive” material overseas and recycle most of the material.
Whatever cannot be melted down and recycled, will be returned to Bruce Power for dry storage.
Bruce Power spokesperson John Peevers says sixteen 100 tonne steam generators have been removed from Units 1 and 2 and bruce A.
They are roughly 30 years old and have been replaced with new generators.
Peevers says the steam generators contained heavy water, and have low level radiation.
Bruce Power officials talked to Bruce County Council to reassure members that there is no risk to the public.
Medical Officer of Health Doctor Hazel Lynn has been reassured as well, that all the necessary precautions will be taken.
The deal means the 16 generators will be trucked thru Bruce and Grey Counties over to the port in Owen Sound where they will be loaded onto ships and taken to Sweden.
Peevers says they looked at several other ports, but Owen Sound works best for the huge material to be off-loaded from trucks onto ships.
There is no definite time frame for the work to be done, likely late summer or early fall.
