West Hill Secondary School in Owen Sound is representing this region at the Provincial Envirothon competition taking place near Guelph for the next two days.
West Hill advanced by winning the regional competition that was held near Owen Sound on April 22nd, Earth Day.
Craig Todd is the local Environthon co ordinator and says the five members of the West Hill Team placed first in all five events, and he is confident they will have a very good chance of winning the Provincial competition.
If they win, they will advance to the International championship which take place in August in Fresno California.
Todd says to prepare for the Guelph competition the five members of the team have been studying up on the different geography of that region, plus the impact a large urban area has on the local environment.
He says conditions there are different from rural Grey Bruce so the five students must be up to date on local environmental issues.
Todd says each of the students will study one specific area of the competition and will become the so called team expert in that field.
He says the competition will be very tough as there will be teams from all across the Province taking part, including ones from larger highschools in the GTA, Ottawa and London areas.
The five students who make up the West Hill team are Julia Asten, David Beisel, Eric Hempel, Page Allerton and Arno van Dyjk.
