Construction costs are expected to soar this summer in connection with the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
Georgian Bluffs Mayor Alan Barfoot told Grey County council, that the price of cement jumped by almost 200 dollars per tonne, literally overnight between Monday and Tuesday.
The price had been 451 dollars per tonne but it soared to 650 dollars as of Tuesday morning, a hike of almost 45 per cent.
Barfoot is chairman of the transportation and public safety committee.
He says any significant price jump, whether it’s 45 per cent or not, will obviously have an impact on all road construction costs started by the county as well as by lower-tier municipalities.
Barfoot says the higher cement cost will definitely be felt, unless a job has already been tendered and the price was locked in prior to Tuesday.
