Brocktons utility manager Collin Saunders is assuring residents that Walkertons water is safe to drink.
This after a science fair project by Sacred Heart High School Student Megan Schlorff revealed that the gross alpha radiation levels in the water were a little high in three of her samples.
Saunders says the municipalitys tests show similar results in the screening process but says all tests remain within Ministry standards.
He says gross alpha is naturally occurring and is likely a result of uranium in the aquifer.
Even so as an extra precaution the municipality is monitoring the situation closely and conducting additional tests .
Saunders, Schlorff along with her mentor University of Guelph professor Dr. Hamid Salsali as well as Ministry of Environment and Health officials have all met to discuss the findings.
Saunders says it was a chance to compare notes and make sure everyone was on the same page.
Ministry officials are currently reviewing Schlorff’s data.
In the meantime Saunders has given Schlorff and her mentor Dr. Salsali copies of all of Walkertons gross alpha results dating back to 2001.
Saunders is looking forward to their input on the matter.
Schlorff has been to four Canada-wide science fairs where she has won five gold medals and two 10 rhousand dollar scholarships.
She also represented Canada at the European Union Contest for Young Scientists in Paris last September.
And she just recently returned from the International Sustainable World Energy, Engineering & Environment Olympiad in Houston Texas with a silver.
