Saugeen Shores is going to undertake a study of municipal parks and sports fields.
Community Services Director Mike Myatt says the review is necessary because of increased activity in the development sector.
Myatt says for example, there are two major subdivisions planned in Port Elgin, with 12 hundred homes proposed in the northwest end and 800 in the southwest.
Myatt says these developments will both generate demand for new parks and
put added pressure on existing parks.
He says the study will identify appropriate park sizes, locations, and functions within the new subdivisions.
It will also examine existing parklands and sports fields to determine if they need to be expanded, re-purposed, or even moved.
Myatt says when Biener Park was first built it was way out in the north end but is now in tight corners, while Lakeview Park is now surrounded by trailers.
And the Cameron Park diamond is being reconfigured this year because too many balls are going out of bounds and hitting nearby houses.
Myatt says the study will be conducted by Monteith Brown and Associates – who are very familiar with the town due to their work on the Official Plan and Parks and Trails Master Plan.
The Active Parklands Analysis will cost 14 thousand dollars.
