Collingwood has banned panhandling on town land or in public buildings.
The new public nuisance by-law is effective immediately.
Councillor Kathy Jeffery, who is also a Downtown Business Association Representative, says more and more people have been approached and felt intimidated by panhandlers particularly in the downtown.
The by-law passed on Monday, May 3rd by a vote of 8 to 1.
Jeffery says the by-law will be enforced by either police or by-law enforcement depending on the nuisance situation.
The person causing a disturbance will be asked to leave the area.
There’s no word on what further punishment if any would be given.
