Students at Walkerton District Secondary School are being offered a new program dealing with safe and clean drinking water.
Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty announced the new program on Monday while touring the Clean Water Centre.
McGuinty says the Environmental and Resources Management Specialist High Skills Major program will help students learn about the technology, and hopefully lead them to jobs in that field.
McGuinty says there are 22 thousand jobs in the sector already, and wants to grow that.
McGuinty says he wants Ontario to be a leader in developing and exporting clean water technology and services, helping other places to protect their water as well.
School principal Cathy Thomson says it’s an important program for the community that will expose the students to the key issues in the area.
She says it will also help connect them to real jobs that students might not otherwise know exist.
The program will be implemented this September, and Thomson says they already have 25 students signed up.
She’s hoping to reach 45.
