It’s been 10 years since the Walkerton water tragedy, and there are still some 200 unresolved claims.
Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty says he’s hoping to have all of those claims resolved sooner rather than later.
So far, the government has spent 70 million dollars resolving claims related to the crisis from May of 2000.
Seven people died and thousands were sick after the town’s water supply was tainted with E. Coli bacteria.
McGuinty says there will be no cap to resolve the issues, because they want to be fair to the people who were affected.
The government has invested 30 million dollars into the new Clean Water Centre in Walkerton.
McGuinty says it’s allowed them to turn a tragic story into a benefit with lasting value.
The Premier says his government is committed to working with municipalities to ensure drinking water is safe.
