A recent fundraising initiative for Owen Sound’s Family Physician Recruitment Committee surpassed its goal of 16 thousand dollars.
The Open Your Heart Champagne Brunch took place at the Best Western Inn on the Bay and netted 17 thousand-600 dollars.
The money is used to provide annual scholarships of up to $2,500 for local residents who are in medical school.
Judy Porteous, spokesperson of the fundraising committee, says it’s a worthwhile event that can’t happen without the support of the community.
Physician recruitment committee chair Michele Mannerow says that while $2,500 won’t cover all of a medical student’s expenses, the money is appreciated by all who receive it.
