John Prettie has been chosen Owen Sound’s Volunteer of the Year.
The local photographer was honoured by city council this week for his 30 years of work in the community.
Although Prettie was nominated by the Kiwanis Club he’s also been involved with several other local groups including the Owen Sound Little Theatre, the Western Ontario Drama League Theatre Festival, Homecoming in 2007 as well as the recent Olympic Torch Relay.
Prettie says he became aware after leaving Owen Sound for university how blessed he had been here, so he returned at his first opportunity.
He realized then how important volunteers are to making a community the kind of place people are proud to live.
During his acceptance speech in the council chamber, Prettie said he would like to share the award with his wife Val, saying without her support he would not have been able to do everything he has done.
